Scheduled for October 18-21 in Orlando, Fla., EDUCAUSE is the industry's premier information technology show focused on the education market.

BASKING RIDGE, N.J., Oct. 13 — Avaya Inc. , a leading global provider of business communications applications, systems and services, today announced it will highlight the benefits of new Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) technology for higher education during EDUCAUSE 2005. Scheduled for October 18-21 in Orlando, Fla., EDUCAUSE is the industry’s premier information technology show focused on the education market.

Avaya experts also will share how they are bringing SIP to the Internet2’s SIP.edu initiative, which is promoting the convergence of communication identities on college campuses by facilitating the use of email addresses for voice and multimedia communication. The SIP.edu initiative seeks to build a large base of SIP-reachable Internet2 users by making existing campus PBX, Centrex, and VoIP systems reachable via SIP.
“Educational institutions are poised to reap significant benefits from SIP,” said Robert Bluemer, North America director, State and Local Government and Education Markets, Avaya. “By adding new SIP capabilities to their existing hardware and software investment, they can prepare their campuses for the future — using intelligent communications to connect students and staff in new ways and making them more productive and accessible.”
An industry-standard protocol, SIP breaks down communications silos and uses a single address to reach students or staff — whether they are on the phone, using a laptop computer, or away from the office on a cell phone or PDA. SIP also erases the boundaries among vendors since it operates with any communications device, regardless of the manufacturer. As a result, colleges and universities are able to add new capabilities to their networks and gain new flexibility, while protecting their investment in their current infrastructure.
Avaya’s booth at EDUCAUSE 2005 (#334) will be set up like a coffee house — complete with a coffee bar and comfortable sofas — offering participants a chance to meet informally with technology experts so they can see first-hand how SIP works and the productivity benefits it delivers. The Avaya team will feature the following SIP offers:
* A freeware version of the Avaya SIP Softphone that allows anyone with a
Windows-based PC or laptop computer and access to an IP network to make
peer-to-peer calls through an easy-to-use, intuitive interface. The
software supports a basic set of telephony and instant messaging
features. For more advanced telephony capabilities, the software can be
easily upgraded to a licensed version that connects to a SIP proxy
server for integration within an Avaya voice network.

* A “SIP~n~Go” package that gives educational institutions an affordable
way to give SIP a try. This bundled offer includes everything needed to
establish a self-contained trial SIP network, including: Avaya
Communications Manager IP telephony software; an Avaya Communications
Manager Media Server and Gateway; Avaya Converged Communications Server
SIP Enablement Services running on an Avaya S8500 Media Server; and
Avaya SIP softphones. A free online tutorial provides guidance on basic
SIP telephony configuration and on how to set up the SIP~n~Go kit.

* A specially priced Avaya SIP Enablement Kit available to those
purchasing or upgrading to a new communications network using Avaya
S8500 or S8710 Media Servers. The kit includes Avaya IP softphone
licenses and Avaya Converged Communications Server SIP Enablement
Services running on an S8500 media server. With this open
communications infrastructure, institutions can easily and affordably
add SIP to their new network.

Avaya and its development partners also will be poised to discuss the following solutions that can help campuses communicate better with students, staff and alumni:
* Solutions for real-time collaboration, conferencing and distance
learning.

* Power applications for students and faculty including mobility
solutions, dorm room messaging, safety and emergency preparedness
features.

* Contact center technologies that can support fundraising initiatives,
improve service to students and alumni, and reduce costs through
operational efficiencies.

About Avaya

Avaya Inc. designs, builds and manages communications networks for more than 1 million businesses worldwide, including over 90 percent of the FORTUNE 500(R). Focused on businesses large to small, Avaya is a world leader in secure and reliable Internet Protocol (IP) telephony systems and communications software applications and services.
Driving the convergence of voice and data communications with business applications — and distinguished by comprehensive worldwide services — Avaya helps customers leverage existing and new networks to achieve superior business results. For more information visit the Avaya website: http://www.avaya.com/.
BACKGROUNDER:
AVAYA SUPPORT FOR INTERNET2 AND THE SIP.EDU WORKING GROUP

Membership in Internet2: Avaya is an active corporate member of Internet2, a consortium of 207 universities working in partnership with industry and government to develop and deploy advanced network applications and technologies that will support the nation’s research institutions and accelerate the creation of tomorrow’s Internet.
Membership in the SIP.edu Working Group: Avaya is collaborating with Internet2’s SIP.edu Working Group which promotes the adoption of new real-time campus communications services using Session Initiation Protocol (SIP). To engage what is estimated to be nearly four million Internet2-connected users in an exploration of new communications models, SIP.edu encourages advanced communications applications that integrate voice, email, video, and instant messaging through presence services and open standards.
Development of an Industry-Leading “Handle-Based Dialing” Feature: Avaya is the first commercial vendor to add SIP.edu functionality to its communications product line, leveraging a campus LDAP(1) directory to allow real-time communications to both SIP and traditional users through existing e- mail addresses. The “Handle-Based Dialing” feature was initially developed by Avaya in conjunction with Harvard University, also a member of both Internet2 and its SIP.edu Working Group. For more information on the Avaya deployment, visit: http://mit.edu/sip/sip.edu/deployments/avaya.shtml
How it works: When the SIP email address (such as sip:username@bigu.edu) is “called,” an Avaya software plug-in queries a campus Lightweight Directory Application Protocol (LDAP) directory for reach information belonging to the individual with that address. If a user is not found on the SIP network, the call is handed off via an Avaya gateway to other PBXs (both traditional and IP-based) so that the call can be completed. In order to honor potential privacy concerns, Avaya’s software allows administrators to decide which phone numbers in the directory are mapped to their email address, giving them control of when and how they are reached.
Availability to other Universities: Now, other universities can easily and affordably implement Handle-Based Dialing by purchasing an Avaya a SIP~N~Go Package (for a SIP trial network) or a SIP Enablement Kit (for Avaya customers upgrading their existing network). Both packages contain everything needed to implement SIP. The dialing by email feature can be added easily to the configuration to allow anyone to reach campus users via a single SIP email address — whether they are on a traditional or SIP-compatible phone, a cell phone or PDA, or using their PC for instant messaging and email.
(1) Lightweight Directory Access Protocol used by Web browsers and email
programs to access a directory listing.

Japan is readying a new network for cell phones that will allow people to connect to the Internet to talk over the phone more cheaply and transmit data more quickly.

The government plans to introduce mobile Voice over Internet telephony by 2007, officials said Thursday.

The mobile service under consideration at the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications will allow people to use Voice-over-Internet Protocol, or VoIP, phone service, on cell phones — similar to what’s now available on fixed lines.

The mobile VoIP services now more common allow people merely to connect their cell phones to the Net at “hot spots” using Wi-Fi wireless access.

Nations around the world are working on Internet telephony on mobile phones, and the Japanese government effort highlights this nation’s efforts to keep up with global telecom trends.

The proposal for the network, which will also transmit large amounts of data such as streaming video on cell phones, is being discussed in a ministry panel of experts and telecommunications officials and is set to reach a decision in December, said ministry official Junko Koizumi.

Although details, including the kind of mobile VoIP technology, are not yet decided, several carriers are expected to apply for licenses to offer mobile VoIP services, which are likely to be cheaper than talking on cell phones today, she said.

The Internet Protocol mobile phones are expected to relay information at up to 15 megabits per second — more than a thousand times faster than the fastest third-generation cell phones now available in Japan at 384 kilobits per second.

Such speeds may slow down if too many people use the service in the same area, and voice quality may go down, Koizumi said.

Pre-configured iSIP service packages can be ordered on ISI's website, as well as, VOIP business phone equipment and installation/support services, making it easy for companies to get the complete package from a single provider. The ISI iSIP Services include porting local businesses telephone numbers and toll free numbers, new local telephone numbers and toll free numbers, and flat rate local and long distance minutes packages. ISI markets iSIP through sales channels and direct to business clients. "This is ideal for our bandwidth sales partners, it facilitates a fresh different approach to market their broadband and a value added service to customers," says Donald Budzik, Director of Channel Sales. Now, SMBs will realize similar savings on business phone service that many residential consumers have realized, using their internet connection for voice services.

DOWNERS GROVE, Ill. –Oct. 12, 2005–ISI Communications, Inc., a Downers Grove, IL based company has released a new SIP-Trunking VOIP phone service for small and medium business (SMB) called “iSIP”. The service is available within the continental US, and can be delivered to any SMB over a broadband internet connection. Pre-configured iSIP service packages can be ordered on ISI’s website, as well as, VOIP business phone equipment and installation/support services, making it easy for companies to get the complete package from a single provider. The ISI iSIP Services include porting local businesses telephone numbers and toll free numbers, new local telephone numbers and toll free numbers, and flat rate local and long distance minutes packages. ISI markets iSIP through sales channels and direct to business clients. “This is ideal for our bandwidth sales partners, it facilitates a fresh different approach to market their broadband and a value added service to customers,” says Donald Budzik, Director of Channel Sales. Now, SMBs will realize similar savings on business phone service that many residential consumers have realized, using their internet connection for voice services.

ISI Communications, Inc., has been serving the communications needs of businesses since 1994, has been working with VOIP technology since 1997, and has developed cost savings packages for the SMB market traditionally served by Incumbent Local Exchange Company (ILEC), and Competitive Local Exchange Companies (CLEC). “The savings businesses realize is two fold,” said Daniel G. Howard, President and founder of ISI. “First the use of IP for transport is much more economical than traditional TDM based networks, allowing us to pass that savings along to the SMB consumer. The second part is the lack of regulatory taxes on this service, typically adding from 13 - 22% to a company’s monthly telephone bill.” Most VOIP service today has been deployed to consumers and has gained wide acceptance throughout the US.

Most VOIP service needs a device to convert the IP based service into a voice transmission at the office. “This is not IP Centrex, this is a service that delivers phone lines/trunks over broadband IP,” says Paul D. Salva, CTO of ISI. “Most businesses using VOIP are subject to the higher cost of individual VOIP extensions, with features hosted by the network provider. iSIP moves the intelligence out to an edge device, giving the customer a lower cost, and more control.” ISI provides VOIP gateways and iPBX devices that convert iSIP to voice, so SMB clients can use their existing phone switch, or replace it with newer iPBX technology. ISI offers SMB all the components needed to start using VOIP today, iSIP service, hardware, and installation, on a national basis.

Since the use of IP bandwidth is required to deliver iSIP services, ISI partners with leading firms that specialize in the delivery of bandwidth services to business. Some of ISI’s partners are available on ISI’s website.

The FCC has introduced regulatory mandates for 911 calls over VOIP, and ISI’s iSIP service will comply with this mandate. 911 calls made from VOIP services have received a great deal of attention in the last 7 months due to 911 calls made by consumer VOIP users. The hardware marketed by ISI provides for a 911 compliant solution that utilizes existing TDM service.

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. –Oct. 12, 2005–GlobeTel Communications Corp. (Amex: GTE) today announced that its wholly owned subsidiary, Sanswire Networks LLC, has signed an agreement with TAO-Technologies (TAO) in cooperation with the University of Stuttgart in Germany. The University of Stuttgart has been well known for the research and development of airships for decades, and has developed an excellent track record in the design, development and flight testing of numerous air vehicles.

The agreement states that TAO-Technologies, in cooperation with the University of Stuttgart, will design several next-generation airships intended for multiple uses. These unique and proprietary designs are specific to certain customer demands and are intended to complement the suite of near-space vehicles currently being developed and built by GlobeTel’s wholly owned subsidiary, Sanswire Networks LLC.

Professor Dr. Bernd Kroplin of the University of Stuttgart stated: “I am excited to continue our working relationship with Mr. Bob Jones, President of Sanswire, and his team of experts in the field of high-altitude airship design and telecommunications platforms. I have seen other large companies attempt to design high altitude airships, and none of them compare to what we can achieve through our mutual cooperation. The world of academia knows that the University of Stuttgart and my team have been working on high altitude airship design for many years. In working together with Sanswire Networks LLC, a subsidiary of GlobeTel Communications Corp as a strategic partner for the design of the high altitude systems, we will have a significant advantage over our competitors.”

“TAO-Technologies, in cooperation with the University of Stuttgart led by Professor Dr. Bernd Kroplin, is highly regarded throughout the world for research, design, development and flight testing of technology demonstrators and prototypes of airships,” said Bob Jones, President of Sanswire LLC. “Dr. Kroplin and TAO-Technologies will bring additional resources and technologies to the table, which will enable us to continue our aggressive move forward with the Stratellite and other high altitude air vehicles.” Mr. Jones continued, “For decades, Germany has been well known throughout the world for its rigid airships which have flown for years, and directly helped the United States Navy in developing and flying the rigid airship in the early 1900’s in support of the World War. The proven German rigid airship design has a direct correlation to Sanswire’s advanced technology that is deployed on our high altitude airship.”

Timothy Huff, Chief Executive Officer of GlobeTel, commented, “Our innovative approach in bringing the right team to the table gives us an unsurpassed advantage over other companies, both large and small. I am very pleased to work with such a well- respected professor like Dr. Bernd Kroplin of the University of Stuttgart. With academia backing and infrastructure already in place to help advance our airship program, TAO-Technologies brings technologies that will certainly continue to enhance our current airship design.” Mr. Huff continued, “Bob Jones with his team of experts have already built a wonderful relationship with Dr. Bernd Kroplin and his team. Sanswire will work very closely with our new strategic partner to deploy the new technology and bring the benefits of our teams’ experience to the Sanswire airship and to the world.”

A Stratellite is similar to a satellite, but is stationed in the stratosphere rather than in orbit. At an altitude of 10 to 13 miles above the Earth, each Stratellite will have clear line-of-sight communications capability to an entire major metropolitan area as well as being able to provide coverage across major rural areas. Several Stratellites linked together could cover many hundreds of thousands of square miles. The Stratellite will allow subscribers to easily communicate in “both directions” using readily available wireless devices. In addition to voice and data, proposed telecommunications uses include cellular, 3G/4G mobile, MMDS, paging, fixed wireless telephony, HDTV, real-time surveillance and others.

About GlobeTel

MCM Telecom Deploys BroadWorks to Deliver Enterprise VoIP Services over Fiber throughout Mexico City

GAITHERSBURG, Md.–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Oct. 11, 2005–
MCM Telecom Deploys BroadWorks to Deliver Enterprise VoIP Services over Fiber throughout Mexico City

BroadSoft, Inc., the leading provider of VoIP application software, today announced that MCM Telecom, a leading competitive service provider based in Mexico City has selected BroadSoft’s hosted VoIP application software to support its suite of corporate voice network services. MCM Telecom will use the BroadSoft(R) BroadWorks(R) platform to deliver hosted PBX services to medium and large enterprises in Mexico City, Guadalajara, and Monterrey.

MCM Telecom’s fiber optic network serves 500 office buildings in Mexico City’s business center. Delivered over MCM’s high-capacity fiber network, its Symphony service lets businesses reduce both ongoing costs and deployment expenses.

MCM Telecom also bundles its “soft phone,” MCM Broadphone, with the service. With the soft phone, users make calls over their PCs, so enterprises do not need to buy new phones for each end user. Productivity improvements come through easy-to-use, web-based control of advanced communications features like find-me/follow-me, group functions, and auto attendant.

“With BroadSoft’s BroadWorks platform, we defined the Symphony service to meet the needs of medium and large enterprise customers,” said Mark Hilton, chief operating officer for MCM Telecom. “Our customers can now access the latest voice and multimedia communications features without major investment and keep their employees as connected and productive as possible.”

“MCM Telecom’s early fiber deployment to key business centers is an example of their vision and focus in addressing the enterprise market in Mexico City,” said Michael Tessler, CEO and president of BroadSoft. “Delivering the BroadWorks-based Symphony service over that infrastructure, and combining those VoIP applications with the MCM Telecom soft client, brings a revolutionary communications alternative to medium and large enterprises.”

BroadSoft’s BroadWorks VoIP application platform provides a comprehensive range of advanced applications, including hosted PBX, IP Centrex, mobile PBX, business trunking and residential broadband services fully integrated into a single VoIP application platform. BroadWorks is uniquely capable of providing these applications with the reliability, redundancy, scalability and regulatory capabilities required to deliver carrier-class service.

About MCM Telecom

MCM, The Broadband Company, was founded in 1996 and is the leading provider of enterprise communications solutions in Mexico, serving corporate customers with mission-critical applications with a complete portfolio of services that encompass local, long distance and international telephony, high speed Internet access, data center, VoIP, data links, wireless and outsourcing.
